Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Sidereal Capricorn | Sravana Nakshatra
Dramatic, foundational change is probable with the longest eclipse of the century in Sidereal Capricorn
For many of us, today’s lunar eclipse will be the catalyst for the foundational changes & deep evolutionary shifts indicated by this summer’s astrology. Several planets are involved via conjunction or opposition. If we’re running any of the dashas of the planets or nakshatra rulers we are especially likely to sense a not so subtle shift this week or within the next 30 days.
During the 103 minutes of this eclipse the moon transits 2 lunar mansions: victorious Uttarashada & sensitive Sravana nakshatras as it conjuncts Mars in Uttarashada & Ketu in Sravana. Opposing the very tight eclipse are retrograde Mercury in vibrational Ashlesha nakshatra & the Sun & Rahu in nourishing Pushya.
Even if we haven’t been keeping one eye on the broad expanse of the night sky, it’s likely we’re noticing that things have felt unusual lately. There’s a new undercurrent to the pathological disharmony promoted by the media & for the first time I’ve witnessed throughout my travels people fighting in the streets. We’re observing first-hand the potentially violent impact of the 2 most intense & instinctual planets in the zodiac: Ketu & retrograde Mars transiting Capricorn arm in arm since May, which are in tight conjunction for the duration of the eclipse.
Because rational logical thought is impaired at the moment (see my preceding Mercury Retrograde post) instinct rules the day. When exploring the instinctual drives influencing transits it’s useful to check in with the medicine of nakshatra yoni animals. For Uttarashada this is the mongoose, which has a unique quality of being impervious to snake venom. It is a fierce fighter & can defeat the most dangerous venomous snakes. This is fascinating as opposing Mercury is in Ashlesha nakshatra, which is associated with snake kings called Nagas (though the yoni animal is the cat). In Ashlesha poison is trapped in the throat rather than being digested & can be transmuted into creativity & healing.
During this eclipse & in the coming weeks, we can meditate on the aspects of our character that are ‘poisoning’ us from fulfilling our earthly mission (which is part of our spiritual mission) & request wisdom & healing. If we avoid facing these or dishonor the opportunity for shadow-growth, which could be projected into partners or others in our lives revealed by the houses & planets that fall on the Cancer-Capricorn axis, there is a higher likelihood of external disruption in the weeks ahead. Pull out a box of tissues if necessary, & do the work.

Sravana is a sensitive nakshatra that shows tremendous growth potential particularly through wisdom learnings. Today is also a Hindu holiday, Guru Purnima. We can take a moment & express gratitude & bow to the generosity & abundance that has come our way from the spiritual teachers who are helping us purify our karmas.
With the eclipse triggering the Mars-Ketu conjunction, we or those around us may feel especially vulnerable or even militant. Mars does not do well with vulnerability & when retrograde lacks control of base expressions. Watch for fiery emotions & symptoms of imbalanced pitta dosha: anger, frustration, destructiveness, ruthless competitiveness & selfishness. Depending on the strength of Ketu in our personal charts we may also experience feelings of isolation, confusion & turmoil. Just as it is Mars’ mission to teach us how to protect ourselves & be stronger, it is Ketu’s to guide us to liberation through letting go.
Looking into the navamsha chart, the theme of moksha (liberation) is clear. Here we discover 6(!) planets in water signs, indicating that much of the spiritual potential of this eclipse is about freeing us of unconscious patterning via the disruptive events revealed in the material rasi chart, however these 4th Pada planets can also be avoidant. There are 4 planets in the degrees of Revati nakshatra, where the deity Pushan guides & protects us on our earthly & spiritual journeys.
Circumstances might not be so easy now. Many of us are feeling foundations of one sort or another shifting. With so many retrograde planets we are experiencing internal shifts. There’s also a growing global awareness of social injustice with Jupiter’s transit through Sidereal Libra. Saturn, the dispositor of the lunar eclipse, is still retrograde in Mula where he takes no prisoners, satisfied with nothing less than authenticity. Opposing retrograde Mercury, planet of discrimination, is close to spin-doctor Rahu in emotional, security craving Cancer where it can be difficult to get mental clarity. In a sense this summer is about shaking us out of our typical coping strategies enough times to break through our personal illusions and defenses to reveal what is true. Because for most of us that’s what it takes. It’s the cracks that let the light in.
We can honor and soothe our tender eclipsed moons with self care especially using rituals involving calm, clear, soothing waters. With the powerhouses of Mars & Ketu involved, we are also being asked to build the muscle of maintaining peace of mind in any environment, even if out of sheer stubbornness. Meditation boot camp anyone? After all Mars is the general of the planetary cabinet & Ketu is the occupying army. Mantras to Ganesh are always helpful with Ketu dashas & south node eclipses: Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha.
Patience patience patience. Boiling waters simmer down & cool. Processes of purification can be gentle or intense & are all in service of our burning away the veils of illusion to remember who we truly are.
With so many planets involved in this month’s eclipse cycle, the impacts and opportunities are very individual. You may be curious about what this means for you personally.
