GURU PURNIMA: JULY 9, 2017
Gratitude and honoring those who came before us is a powerful vibrational purifier. On July 9th, full moon day, Buddhists, Hindus & Jains will celebrate Guru Purnima, a day for honoring teachers.
Guru, the word we usually think of as ‘teacher’, translates as ‘Dispeller of Darkness’, that is, someone who guides us from the darkness of ignorance to the illumination of knowledge or truth. This can refer to any teacher in our lives who educates and inspires us: a spiritual guru; an academic mentor; the aunt who guided you through a difficult time with her wisdom … you get the picture.
There is never a wrong time to practice thanks and gratitude, however the mental and spiritual energy of this day is especially powerful and auspicious for strengthening your bond to your teacher and teachings. It’s a great day for beginning a spiritual practice of some sort.
Traditionally a devotee wakes early on Guru Purnima and sits in meditation. Some also fast for the duration of the day. I’ve made a practice of reaching out in thanks to living teachers by email or phone. Everyone loves to be appreciated!
